In Nakhon Phanom, the Mekong River has reached a critical high of 12 meters, causing the Un and Songkhram rivers to exceed capacity and flood residential areas and agricultural land, including over 20,000 rai of rice fields. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, anticipating wider impact if the Mekong’s level remains elevated.
On 12 August 2025 GMT+7, reporters in Nakhon Phanom province noted that the Mekong River’s peak at 12 meters marks a critical point. The high water level not only affects the lowland areas along the border riverbanks but also disrupts the main tributaries, especially the Un and Songkhram rivers. These tributaries are heavily impacted, unable to discharge water into the Mekong due to backflow. The Un River is overflowing at 60% above capacity, with water levels about 4 meters above the riverbank, causing severe flooding in agricultural areas.
Initial surveys show more than 20,000 rai of agricultural land and rice fields submerged, with the worst flooding in Si Songkhram and Na Wa districts where over 10,000 rai of rice fields are affected. If the Mekong’s level does not decrease within 1 to 2 weeks, heavy damage is expected. Relevant agencies are currently surveying the damage and providing assistance and compensation.
Additionally, over 20 houses in Ban Pak Un area, Si Songkhram municipality, located along the riverbank, have been flooded due to overflow. Officials have surveyed the area, provided aid, and helped residents evacuate belongings to higher ground. Should the Mekong continue to rise, greater impact is anticipated, prompting readiness and close monitoring of vulnerable areas.
