Soldier Loses Leg After Stepping on PMN-2 Mine at Chong An Ma, Urgently Hospitalized

A military reconnaissance team stepped on a PMN-2 landmine in the Chong An Ma area, Ubon Ratchathani province, resulting in injury and leg amputation. The soldier was urgently transported to the hospital for treatment.

At 11:50 a.m. on 17 Aug 2026 GMT+7, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team of the National Mine Operations Center, Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, was conducting bomb disposal in the Chong An Ma area, Ubon Ratchathani. Sergeant Major Chanarong Wongsana, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, stepped on a landmine causing leg amputation.

Reports indicate that during the operation, Sergeant Major Chanarong stepped on a PMN-2 mine, triggering an explosion. He sustained injuries including an amputation below the right knee and severe shrapnel wounds to his right hand. He remained conscious at the time of the incident.

After the incident, the unit immediately halted operations in the area and transported the injured soldier to Nam Yuen Hospital in Si Wi Chian Subdistrict, Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani province for urgent medical care.

Officials subsequently secured the area and are preparing to conduct further inspections of the minefield to prevent harm to personnel and civilians who might enter the vicinity. Details on the injured soldier's condition and further operational updates will be provided by relevant authorities.
