Khao Kheow Open Zoo announces success in breeding flamingos. Flamingos. Currently, there are 82 flamingos, including six newly hatched chicks.
On 19 Aug 2026 GMT+7, at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Si Racha district, Chonburi province, Mr. Narongwit Chodchoi, director of the zoo, revealed that six flamingo chicks newly hatched range in age from about two weeks to one month. These chicks represent the second generation born in 2026, reflecting the zoo's success in breeding flamingos in captivity, which requires proper management of space, environment, and care.
All chicks receive close care from veterinarians and caretakers, including health checks, growth monitoring, and ensuring good health, before being prepared to safely join their parents and the rest of the flamingo flock.
Breeding flamingos is challenging because each bird lays only one egg and incubation lasts about one month. Therefore, the survival of chicks is a significant achievement that depends on cooperation among various staff members.
Previously, Khao Kheow Open Zoo relocated the flamingos to a larger area and improved the landscape and environment to suit their natural behaviors, especially flocking and mating. As a result, over the past two to three years, the number of flamingo chicks hatched and surviving has steadily increased.
Currently, the zoo has 82 flamingos, including six newly hatched chicks, and two eggs are still incubating. Staff continue to closely monitor and care for these eggs to improve the chances of adding new members to the flock.
Visitors can admire the beautiful flamingo flock and the adorable growing chicks daily at the flamingo exhibit in the Africa zone of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Chonburi province.
