Tak Province is experiencing flooding in Mae Sot during the early morning after the Moei River overflowed its banks. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) issued a Cell Broadcast alert warning of severe flooding across several border districts in Tak, including flooding within the Mae Sot municipality. Landslides and mudslides occurred, and city shops prepared sandbags to block water. Some areas are already flooded.
At 07:50 hrs on 21 August 2026 in Tak Province, reporters noted that continuous heavy rain over several days and throughout the night in five border districts caused rising water levels in creeks and the Moei River. Especially in Mae Sot municipality, flooding began at around 04:00 hrs and continues, though some areas have seen water levels recede slightly.
Residents near their homes began monitoring flood risks, and many shops mobilized workers to place sandbags at storefronts to prevent water intrusion. Some flooded spots have made vehicle travel impossible, but overall movement remains mostly normal. The water level in Mae Sot creek remains high at 20 meters.
Mr. Kul Kruaweera, mayor of Mae Sot municipality, along with municipal executives and council members, inspected the creeks and drainage points. He urged residents in the Mae Sot area to remain cautious of flooding, as water in Mae Sot creek has overflowed. The municipality is accelerating water drainage and has been installing drainage pipes throughout the year. If Moei River water levels do not rise further, severe flooding is unlikely.
Meanwhile, a chicken rice vendor known as Je Waen in Mae Sot market told reporters that he began preparing food at 1 a.m. amid heavy, continuous rain. However, water had not yet flooded the area; the market started to flood around 4 a.m.
As for the Moei River level near the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge No. 1, at 07:00 hrs water stood 0.7 meters above the riverbank, rising 10 cm in the past hour. Riverside market vendors began packing up as floodwaters started entering the market from 4 a.m.
Most recently, the Tak provincial DDPM issued the highest level flood warning, reporting that Moei River levels in Mae Sot and Mae Ramat districts have overflowed and continue rising. With ongoing rain, residents living along the Moei River in the subdistricts of Mae Pa, Mae Gu, Maha Wan, Mae Tao, Mae Kasa, Phra That Pha Daeng, and the Mae Sot municipality in Mae Sot District, as well as Mae Ja Reua subdistrict in Mae Ramat District, are urged to move belongings to higher ground and relocate vehicles immediately.
