Sad Discovery of a Bairds Beaked Whale Carcass Floating Near Khai Island, Satun Province, Estimated Dead for About a Month

Sad discovery of a carcass of a Baird's beaked whale floating in the sea near Khai Island, Satun Province. Officials from Tarutao National Park investigated and found it severely decomposed, measuring 10 meters long, estimated dead for about one month.

On 25 Aug 2026 GMT+7, reporters learned that Mr. Surachai Thatet, head of Tarutao National Park, Satun Province, received notification from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources that fishermen had found a whale carcass near Khai Island within the Tarutao National Park area. Along with assistant Mr. Wisanuvich Thong-on and other officials, he went to inspect the site.

Upon arrival, officials found the whale carcass floating in the sea, estimated to have died about one month ago. The carcass showed signs of fish scavenging and was decomposed to the point that its sex could not be identified, but it was confirmed to be a Baird's beaked whale about 10 meters long. Samples were collected and sent for autopsy awaiting results from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources.

Regarding Baird's beaked whales in Satun Province, they are occasionally found and are a rare and endangered marine species.
