1 Sep 2026 GMT+7The Meteorological Departmentissued a statement titled "Heavy to Very Heavy Rain in Upper Thailand" (effective until 2 Sep 2026 GMT+7), the 12th announcement, stating that Thailand will experience increased rainfall, with heavy to very heavy rain in some areas, especially the western parts of the north and central regions, upper northeastern region, eastern parts, and the east.
This is due to a monsoon trough shifting across the north and upper northeast into a depression over southern China, combined with a strong southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.
Residents in these areas are advised to be cautious of heavy to very heavy rain and accumulated rainfall that may cause flash floods and mountain runoff, especially in foothill areas near waterways and low-lying areas. They should avoid traveling through areas prone to repeated flooding, particularly lowlands where short-term waterlogging may occur.
The upper Andaman Sea will experience strong winds with waves 2-3 meters high, and in areas with thunderstorms, waves may exceed 3 meters. The lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand will have waves around 2 meters high, with waves above 2 meters where thunderstorms occur. Mariners in these seas should navigate carefully and avoid sailing in stormy areas. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are advised not to leave port during this period.
Meanwhile, the depression has strengthened into Tropical Storm “Sodel” in the northern South China Sea east of Hainan Island and is expected to approach Taiwan on 3-4 Sep 2026 GMT+7. Travelers to this area should check weather conditions before departure. This storm will not move into Thailand.
