The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation announced 40 new wildlife sanctuary zones as protected areas the Crested Bulbul or the Pycnonotus jocosus with strict measures to prevent hunting in all forest areas
On 3 September 2026, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation advanced significant conservation measures. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment officially announced 40 additional wildlife sanctuary zones to protect the Crested Bulbul or Pycnonotus jocosus, adding it to the list of protected wildlife species in 2026. This announcement ensures that all conservation forests and national reserved forests are strictly designated as no-hunting zones for the Crested Bulbul.
Mr. Atthapol Charoenchansa, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, explained that on 1 September, the Crested Bulbul was officially removed from the protected wildlife list. However, 40 wildlife sanctuary zones had not yet included this species in their no-hunting lists.
Since the Crested Bulbul was delisted under Section 7 of the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019), this could negatively impact the bird. Therefore, to legally protect the Crested Bulbul in all conservation forest areas, including the 40 wildlife sanctuary zones, an additional announcement was necessary to prevent hunting and ensure effective population management.
Under the authority of Section 5 paragraph one and Section 62 of the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019), Mr. Suchat Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, with approval from the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Committee, signed this announcement to add the Crested Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus) to the no-hunting list in the 40 wildlife sanctuary zones nationwide.
This Ministry announcement was published in the Government Gazette on 1 September 2026 and took legal effect the following day. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation informs the public and stakeholders that all conservation and national reserved forest areas are now protected zones for the Crested Bulbul.
