The Buriram Meteorological Department confirmed no earthquake occurred after people inside the municipal building felt shaking and ran out in panic, but the cause has yet to be determined.
Nang Rong District and the Buriram Meteorological Department confirmed that the shaking felt in the Buriram municipal office building and two shopping centers was not due to an earthquake. It is likely caused by shifting underground water or mud, as Buriram has no known fault lines.
On 3 Sep 2026, reporters reported that staff in the five-story Buriram municipal office clearly felt shaking, raising suspicions of an earthquake, prompting over 100 officials to evacuate the building in panic. Later, it was learned that two nearby malls and a supercenter also felt the tremors, though less strongly than the municipal building.
Subsequently, the Buriram Meteorological Department explained that earthquake monitoring showed no earthquake associated with the incident. They will continue to monitor and investigate the data.
This explanation did not satisfy municipal officials and the public, who want to know the true cause and urge the Meteorological Department to provide more detailed information.
Recently, Mr. Patthana Monthon, director of the Buriram Meteorological Station, stated that around 2:00 p.m. on 2 Sep, when people felt shaking or suspected an earthquake, earthquake monitoring units confirmed no earthquake had occurred.
Buriram's Meteorological Department has ground acceleration sensors that immediately report any ground shaking to the earthquake monitoring center. At the time in question, the instruments received no such data.
The event may have been caused by several possible factors, such as shifting mud or underground cavities, or other causes not yet identified, but it is confirmed that it was definitely not an earthquake.
