In the evening of 8 Sep 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Sombat Poomphetsa, an investigator from Thoen Police Station in Lampang, received a report of a large rock falling onto a pickup truck resulting in a fatality on the Thoen-Li Road at kilometer 117, just before the Nang Ram curve, Moo 3, Na Pong Subdistrict, Thoen District, Lampang. He promptly went to the scene along with local rescue teams.
At the scene, the body of Mr. Sonthaya Nukhaw, 42, from Doi Tao District, Chiang Mai Province, was found. A rock larger than a person's embrace had fallen onto the roof of his gray Isuzu pickup truck, crushing him and leaving him lying in a pool of blood inside the vehicle. Rescue workers helped extract the body and transported it to Thoen Hospital for a detailed autopsy. The authorities will also coordinate with the family to collect the body according to procedures.
Preliminary investigation revealed that before the incident, the deceased had returned after picking up his wife in Sisaket Province. The couple were traveling together (husband driving, wife seated beside him) via the Thoen-Li route. At the accident site, which is mountainous, the rock rolled down from the hillside, struck the roof of the vehicle, and crushed the driver, causing his death. The wife was unharmed. The exact cause is still under investigation.
