Lampang – The Director of the Buddhist Office filed a complaint against a singer and an entertainment venue after a video showed a performer dressed like a monk and displaying inappropriate behavior on stage. He pointed out that this might violate Section 206 for insulting religion and urged people not to further harm the religion or become fixated on individuals.
The case began when a popular entertainment venue’s Facebook page in Lampang posted a video of a stage performance. In the video, a male singer wore orange robes resembling those of a monk and carried an object resembling a palad khik as part of the act. This sparked intense social media criticism, questioning the appropriateness of the performance.
Regarding this matter, at 12:00 on 13 Sep 2026, Mr. Kanungkit Promnuchanon, Director of the Lampang Provincial Office of Buddhism, submitted evidence and filed a complaint with Police Lieutenant Colonel Wichian Jaisanklang, Investigating Officer at Lampang City Police Station. The complaint concerned the video posted by the entertainment venue showing the singer dressed like a monk, using a pillow resembling a palad khik, and performing inappropriate gestures on stage, which caused distress and discomfort among many Buddhists.
The Director of the Lampang Provincial Office of Buddhism stated that he was aware of the incident and deeply concerned. He described the performance as highly inappropriate and said that the office’s legal team was reviewing the case to determine which laws might have been violated. Initially, it appears the acts may breach Criminal Code Section 206 for insulting religion and Section 208 for impersonating a monk.
Beyond this, administrative authorities are also reviewing possible violations of the Entertainment Venue Act, obscenity laws, and are preparing to investigate potential breaches of the Computer Crime Act.
He added that the current news has already harmed the faith of Buddhists who uphold Buddhism. He pleaded with the public not to further damage the religion but instead to help nurture and improve it. He emphasized not to be fixated on individuals because the Buddha entrusted his teachings to represent Buddhism. Good Buddhists should adhere to these teachings. Acts that mock or disrespect religion in any way are inappropriate and should not be done.
