Somnuek Thanadechakul, Mayor of Nonthaburi Municipality, revealed that water pumping is being accelerated, expecting all areas to dry normally within 2-3 days. So far, 50,000 sandbags have been placed to reinforce flood defenses along 10 kilometers of the Chao Phraya River bank to manage upstream water.
At 15:00 on 29 September 2026, Somnuek Thanadechakul, Mayor of Nonthaburi Municipality, stated that after two days without rain, the water situation in Nonthaburi Municipality has almost returned to normal. However, some areas remain flooded, such as around Khlong Bang Talat and Khlong Suai, where water must be pushed out because the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority’s siphon pipes—two pipes each 2 meters in diameter—discharge water into Khlong Suai, slowing drainage. Additionally, water from Bangkok is released through the siphon in the middle of the waterworks, increasing the municipality’s pumping workload there. Other areas have seen water levels decrease.
Somnuek said that especially since the rain stopped two days ago, the situation in the municipality has improved, though some flooding remains in Pracha Niwet 2 and 3 and areas adjoining Khlong Suai, such as Soi Pracha Chuen 6, 7, and 8. The municipality has not been idle and is working diligently to pump water out.
He added that municipal staff have been mobilized to fill sandbags to reinforce flood barriers along the 10-kilometer stretch of the Chao Phraya River bank. Since river water levels have risen due to increased discharge from the Chao Phraya Dam, the municipality is working continuously to strengthen these defenses to protect residents.
Somnuek further stated that this year’s upstream water volume is high, but since the rain has stopped, they are focusing on reinforcing the 10-kilometer riverside area to prevent water from entering the inner zones, ensuring safety for residents after heavy rains caused significant damage. Sandbag barriers along the Chao Phraya River are being continuously reinforced.
The municipality has also continuously operated pumps at all 16 drainage gates along canals by the Chao Phraya River to remove as much water as possible. It is expected to take another 2-3 days for water levels inside to return to normal. Currently, water levels have dropped significantly and disruptions have lessened, with the main concern limited to homes adjacent to Khlong Suai, where the municipality is intensively working.
Somnuek reported that along the Chao Phraya riverside, 40,000 to 50,000 sandbags have already been placed. Yesterday, the river reached a peak of over 2.50 meters above mean sea level, which has now passed. If more water arrives, the municipality will further raise and strengthen flood barriers to prevent river water from entering inner zones. They have assigned 24-hour guards to monitor water gates and barriers. Regarding the two siphon pipes discharging from the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority into Khlong Suai, the municipality plans to coordinate with the authority to reduce water flow because it affects residents with homes adjacent to Khlong Suai, which extends several tens of kilometers to Thung Song Hong, Don Mueang. Nonthaburi Municipality receives a significant volume of water from this source and will work to decrease the discharge accordingly.
