Floodwaters in Pathum Thani have recently begun to subside, but canal water is turning foul, with many dead fish floating in Khlong Nueng. Authorities are rushing to remove the carcasses.
At 08:00 on 15 Oct 2026 GMT+7, reporters covered the flood situation across several areas in Pathum Thani province. Water levels have started to decline, but a new problem has arisen: canals are becoming foul and emitting strong odors due to oxygen depletion. This has caused many fish species to die and float, filling the canals with a rotten smell. Particularly in Khlong Nueng Subdistrict, Khlong Luang District, Pathum Thani, aquatic animals are surfacing to breathe, with many dead fish strewn about.
Local residents reported that although the prolonged flooding has begun to recede, stagnant floodwater in villages and homes has led to water becoming polluted. When this contaminated water is pumped into the canals, it inevitably causes the canal water to deteriorate as well. This polluted condition has accumulated over several days.
Officials from Khlong Luang Municipality have been on-site collecting and disposing of dead fish to mitigate the issue initially. However, today fish are still surfacing for air and dying in increasing numbers.
