Flooding in Chachoengsao has persisted for 20 days without receding, worsened by additional rainfall. An 81-year-old grandmother uses a foam sheet to paddle away from leech bites. She remains fearful at night and struggles to sleep. The compensation money to be received is insufficient to cover the damages incurred.
On 19 Oct 2023 GMT+7, the flooding situation in Muang District, Chachoengsao remains critical. Residents have been submerged in stagnant water for over 20 days. Last night, repeated rainfall caused canal water to overflow, flooding houses again. As a result, water on the local rural road in Soi Pongpon rose high enough to prevent small vehicles from passing, and dozens of roadside shops had to close temporarily.
Additionally, in Village 5, Khlong Udom Chonlajorn Subdistrict, Muang District, Chachoengsao Province, residents’ homes remain flooded with water about 30–40 centimeters deep. Many belongings and electrical appliances have been damaged, making daily life extremely difficult.
Mrs. Sangob Mongsiri, 81, an affected resident, revealed that she and her husband have lived amid flooding for several weeks. They raised their bed off the floor using wood to avoid the water. She avoids walking through the water due to previous leech bites. She has adapted floating foam sheets that came with the water as makeshift boats to carefully move around the house.
At night, she barely sleeps due to anxiety, fearing more rain and further flooding. Besides heavy property damage, the compensation received does not cover the actual losses. She appeals to relevant authorities to promptly drain water from the area and increase financial aid and relief supplies for those enduring prolonged flooding.
