500-Year-Old Phitsanulok City Wall Unearthed Under Mahathammaracha Road

Fine Arts Office Region 6 in Sukhothai inspected a 500-year-old Phitsanulok city wall buried beneath Mahathammaracha Road after workers accidentally found it during upgrades to the underground electrical and cable distribution system.

At 10:00 a.m. on 29 Oct 2026 at Mahathammaracha Road (San Pu Dam Market), Nai Mueang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phitsanulok Province, Ms. Nataya Phusri, Director of the Archaeology Group of Fine Arts Office Region 6 in Sukhothai, along with Mr. Sirichin Hanpitakpong, Mayor of Phitsanulok Municipality, and related agencies, visited the site to inspect the ancient city wall line accidentally discovered by workers during the underground electrical and cable system upgrade project.

The discovery was a large line of ancient bricks buried about 45 centimeters below the road surface. Authorities cordoned off the area to allow archaeologists to conduct a detailed examination.

Ms. Nataya Phusri said that preliminary inspections suggest this is the ancient Phitsanulok city wall from the reign of King Boromtrailokkanat. The upper part of the wall has completely collapsed, leaving only the foundation buried underground, approximately 6 to 7 meters wide.

"This is the southern wall section of Phitsanulok city, about 500 years old from the Ayutthaya period. It is characterized by brick construction for strength, unlike the Sukhothai era walls which were typically made of earth," said the archaeology group director.

Mr. Sirichin Hanpitakpong, Mayor of Phitsanulok Municipality, stated that he has ordered contractors to stop work at the site and will consult with the Fine Arts Department to determine appropriate measures that balance project progress with preservation of the historic site.

Initially, Fine Arts Office Region 6 in Sukhothai will coordinate with Phitsanulok Municipality and the Provincial Electricity Authority to develop a plan to conserve the ancient city wall foundation as a historical learning site without disrupting the underground electrical system upgrade.
