Urgent Investigation of Suspicious Object Resembling Space Debris Stranded on Bamboo Island, Krabi

GISTDA has joined forces with the Marine Department and Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park to investigate a suspicious object resembling space debris that washed ashore near Bamboo Island, Krabi. Authorities warn the public not to touch or move the object under any circumstances as it may contain hazardous chemicals.

On 5 Nov 2026, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), through its Space Technology Research Center (S-TREC), visited Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, Krabi, to receive and inspect a suspicious object resembling space debris that washed ashore near the park's protection unit P.P.3 (Bamboo Island). The discovery was initially reported on Sunday, 1 Nov 2026.

During this visit, Dr. Sitthiporn Channamsin, director of S-TREC, met with Navy Captain Somkiat Songsawat, deputy director of the Maritime National Interests Protection Command Center in Krabi province, and Mr. Worawit Jitrua, assistant head of Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, along with relevant officials from all three agencies. They exchanged information on the discovery and preservation of the object, maritime security monitoring, technical data, and space object tracking. Following the joint discussion, GISTDA took the object for detailed engineering analysis at the Space Innovation Park in Chonburi to determine its origin and will report findings later.

Authorities advise that if the public finds a suspicious object resembling space debris, they must not touch or move it due to potential hazardous chemicals. They should photograph the object, record its location, and immediately notify officials or GISTDA.
