Bangkok Residents Warned as Morning PM 2.5 Levels Exceed Standards to Orange Level in Two Areas

Update on this morning's PM 2.5 levels in Bangkok shows concentrations exceeding standards at the orange level, starting to affect health in two areas.

5 Jan 2025 GMT+7 Bangkok Air Quality Information Center The Bangkok air quality monitoring station reported PM 2.5 particulate matter (particles no larger than 2.5 microns) at 07:00 am. The 24-hour average PM 2.5 was measured between 19.3 and 40.8 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), exceeding the standard at the orange level, which begins to impact health (standard limit is 37.5 µg/m³), in two locations:

1. Pathumwan district, in front of Samyan Mitrtown shopping mall: 40.8 µg/m³.

2. Chatuchak district, in front of Kasetsart University: 38.5 µg/m³.

The air quality index from Bangkok monitoring stations is mostly at moderate levels.

The Meteorological Department forecasts cool morning weather in the Bangkok area.

Health advisory: Air quality at the orange level begins to affect health.

For the general public: Use personal protective equipment such as PM 2.5 masks whenever going outdoors. Limit the duration of strenuous outdoor activities or exercise. Watch for abnormal symptoms like coughing, difficulty breathing, or eye irritation.

For at-risk groups: Use personal protective equipment such as PM 2.5 masks whenever going outdoors.

Avoid strenuous outdoor activities or exercise. Follow medical advice and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms develop.

Related factors (weather forecast affecting PM 2.5 levels from 4-12 Jan 2025): air ventilation is mostly weak, with a closed atmospheric layer near the surface and occasional strong winds. Thus, PM concentration is expected to range from moderate to good. Today's forecast is cool morning weather.

Satellite data from NASA detected one hotspot on 4 Jan 2025 at 13:24 in Lam Phak Chi subdistrict, Nong Chok district, Bangkok, showing abnormally high ground heat.

The Environment Office has coordinated with all relevant agencies to tighten enforcement of dust pollution control plans to mitigate the severity of PM 2.5 pollution and its health impacts. The office invites public participation to change behaviors and reduce dust-producing activities with the “5 Ways to Reduce Dust You Can Do” campaign: 1. Regularly clean your home by dusting; 2. Avoid burning trash and incense; 3. Plant trees to absorb pollution and trap dust; 4. Use public transport; 5. Turn off engines when parked and maintain vehicles to prevent excessive black smoke.
