Bangkok Finds Lumpini Park Cats Infected with Flesh-Eating Fungus, All Sent for Treatment

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration conducted screening of the "Lumpini Park cats" and found them infected with a flesh-eating fungal infection; all have been sent for treatment. Authorities also warned against abandoning cats, noting that violators will face fines.

On 4 Feb 2026, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, through the Health Department, the Environment Department, and the Animal Aid Association under Royal Patronage, proactively conducted screening and provided assistance to cats at Lumpini Park.

Following surveillance that identified cats infected with sporotrichosis, a fungal disease requiring close treatment, officials successfully tracked and captured all four infected cats. They were sent to the Bangkok Dog Control Center (Prawet) for treatment. The Public Health Veterinary Office will continue veterinary monitoring in the area to prevent re-outbreaks and plans to control reproduction to stop population overgrowth in the park.

Bangkok is not only providing treatment but also actively surveying and collecting data on unsterilized cats. They have coordinated with the Health Department's mobile medical units to conduct sterilizations, aiming for sustainable control of the cat population in the park.

The issue of cats in Lumpini Park has been a persistent problem for over a decade. Despite Bangkok's efforts to care for them, people continue to abandon pets in the park. This "love without responsibility" shifts the burden and suffering onto the animals and the community.

Furthermore, abandoning animals is illegal under the Prevention of Cruelty and Welfare of Animal Act, B.E. 2557 (2014), Section 23. Abandoning animals in public spaces can result in fines up to 40,000 baht.
