Songkran Festival on Khao San Road 2026: Crowds Surge, Police Tighten Security with No Violent Incidents Reported

Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam, Bangkok Metropolitan Police Chief, visited Khao San Road for the 2026 Songkran Festival, emphasizing that the overall situation remains orderly with a steady influx of tourists. Daily attendance is expected to reach 100,000, and “smart cameras” are being used to strictly enhance security.

On 13 Apr 2026, Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom, Chief of Bangkok Metropolitan Police, inspected security arrangements on Khao San Road during the Songkran Festival. He stated that overall safety in Bangkok during Songkran is stable, with no reports of fights or violent incidents. Officials continue regular patrols and publicize safety information to tourists.

During today’s visit, police engaged in discussions to inform both Thai and foreign tourists enjoying Songkran water activities on Khao San Road. The atmosphere remains peaceful with no signs of groups gathering for unlawful activities.

Yesterday (12 Apr), approximately 30,000 tourists visited Khao San Road despite it not being the official festival day. Today (13 Apr), the number is expected to rise steadily from noon onward. The area can accommodate up to about 80,000 visitors; if capacity is reached, access points will be closed and entry restricted, with visitors advised to use surrounding streets for water celebrations instead.

It is anticipated that during this Songkran, daily tourist numbers will not fall below 100,000, similar to last year. Despite current challenges such as war, rising living costs, and higher travel expenses, Songkran tourism appears unaffected.

The police chief also added that officers are using an AI-based smart camera system for security and tourist screening, which has already identified several individuals with arrest warrants. This technology provides reassurance to visitors that the area remains safe.
