Lightning Strike Injures Rider at Ratchavipha Interchange, Hits Helmet Center, Necklace Breaks

A rider was struck by lightning while riding past the Ratchavipha interchange bridge. The strike hit the center of his helmet, breaking his necklace. He was injured and urgently taken to the hospital for treatment.

At 3:30 p.m. on 2 June 2026, reporters learned that volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation received a report of a lightning strike hitting a motorcycle, causing serious injuries, on the Ratchavipha overpass above Vibhavadi Rangsit Road heading toward Ratchayothin intersection, in Chatuchak district, Bangkok. They promptly went to investigate.

At the scene, they found Mr. Piya Siangchai, 46, a rider from Chonburi province, lying unconscious on his back. His left neck showed a long burn mark extending to his chest. A brass Buddha amulet he wore had fallen from his neck. His black Honda Scoopy motorcycle, with Bangkok license plates and a food delivery box attached, was damaged. Preliminary findings indicated lightning struck the center of his helmet, causing the necklace to break and leaving burn marks on the middle of the helmet.

It was learned that the injured man was delivering food on his motorcycle when he reached the Ratchavipha overpass during heavy rain. Lightning struck him directly, causing him to lose control and crash. In serious condition, volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation and Chulabhorn emergency rescue arrived to assist and transported him to Kasemrad Prachachuen Hospital for further treatment.
