Most recently (19 July 2026), it was reported that Wat That Thong released a statement regarding the discovery of a coffin during restoration work at the Limpaporn Vihara. The statement noted that the news about finding the coffin beneath the Limpaporn Vihara during renovation work on 18 July 2026 is now widely known.
Wat That Thong wishes to clarify the following facts:
1. The Limpaporn Vihara was constructed in 1971 by the Linpaporn family.
2. In 2025, the temple committee discussed renovating the Limpaporn Vihara, which had deteriorated over time. The renovation included reinforcing the foundation, lifting the structure to improve the surrounding landscape, and increasing usable space. Restoration began in April 2026.
3. On 16 July 2026, during excavation under the vihara, the renovation company informed the temple treasurer that they found a reinforced concrete structure resembling a lime pit behind the principal Buddha statue. They requested permission to investigate further and discovered a rectangular object resembling a coffin inside. The temple assigned representatives to file a police report at Klongtan Metropolitan Police Station so relevant authorities could proceed.
4. Investigation confirmed that the reinforced concrete pit contained a coffin with skeletal remains. The temple contacted the descendants of the Limpaporn vihara builders and learned it was the great-grandmother of the family, "Grandmother Fung Linpaporn," who died in 1951 and whose ashes were later interred under this vihara.
This aligns with preliminary forensic and evidence officials’ findings that the skeleton is female. The temple has coordinated with the descendants and the Klongtan Police Station to arrange the transfer of the skeletal remains.
5. The descendants have arranged to receive the skeletal remains of Grandmother Fung Linpaporn to conduct memorial rites at Wat That Thong. Subsequently, the temple will discuss with the family representatives the cremation process and reinterment of the ashes at the Limpaporn Vihara as before.
