A mother with depression carried her 3-year-old daughter and jumped from a 4th-floor apartment on Phetchaburi Road. Both were injured. She is suspected to have been stressed and imagined someone would harm her.
At 10:30 a.m. on 19 Sep 2016, Police Lieutenant Juthaphol Muangsong, deputy investigator of Phaya Thai police station, received a report of a mother and child seriously injured after falling from a residential building. The incident occurred at an apartment on Soi Phetchaburi 37, Makkasan subdistrict, Ratchathewi district, Bangkok. He, along with Ramathibodi Hospital rescue unit and Ruamkatanyu Foundation volunteers, went to investigate.
The scene was a five-story residential building. Behind the building on the ground, the injured were found breathing weakly. Their names were Ms. Yupin, 48, lying on her back wearing a short-sleeve black T-shirt and white shorts with black patterns, and her daughter, 3-year-old Patcharin, lying face down in a yellow short-sleeve shirt and shorts. Nearby was a pink towel.
It was initially learned that both fell from the balcony of their 4th-floor apartment. After first aid, the injured were rushed to Ramathibodi Hospital for treatment. Ms. Yupin is now stable, but her daughter remains in critical condition.
Officials went up to inspect the room where the incident occurred and found the door locked from the inside. They had to force the door open and found the room in normal condition with no signs of ransacking or struggle.
Investigation revealed that Ms. Yupin had divorced her husband and had rented the apartment with her two daughters for several years. She suffers from depression and does not work. She has a younger brother and relatives helping her pay the monthly rent of a little over 3,000 baht and daily expenses. Ms. Yupin had previously experienced hallucinations and told other residents she was constantly afraid someone would harm her.
Police Lieutenant Juthaphol, in charge of the case, said that no questioning of the injured has taken place yet as they are still receiving treatment. Both are now safe. Witnesses said Ms. Yupin suffers from mental illness. It is initially believed she was stressed and paranoid about being harmed, which led her to carry her daughter and jump. Fortunately, neither died.
