Bangkok Revamps Communication on Heavy Rain and Flooding to Be Concise, Fast, and Accurate

Bangkok is revamping its communication of "heavy rain and flooding" to be faster, using easy-to-understand language while ensuring accuracy, emphasizing speed, conciseness, and connecting with the public's feelings.

On 27 Sep 2026 GMT+7, reporters noted that those following Bangkok’s official page have noticed the recent flood alerts and infographics are communicated in a friendly, straightforward style during this heavy rain crisis. Besides expediting water drainage, a key public focus is "fast and accurate information communication."

Recently, Bangkok’s main Facebook page, now exceeding 800,000 followers, has received widespread praise for adopting an easy-to-understand, swift posting style that also uses relaxed language to ease the tension for city residents.

Reporters spoke with the behind-the-scenes team of Bangkok’s page. Mr. Weerayut Sukhon, a public relations officer from the Office of Communications, explained that no external agencies were hired. Instead, a diverse group of Bangkok civil servants collaborated to simplify official or complex warnings into conversational language, like "friends telling friends," so people can immediately understand posts on their social feeds.

Mr. Weerayut said the key is to create engaging social media content. For example, weather warnings using metaphors like "a dragon-like sky" or "distorted sky" come from civil servants observing real situations and crafting words that capture attention. All content is supported by management and always grounded in factual accuracy and precise information.

Meanwhile, Ms. Naritsara Suepaisan, Assistant Secretary to the Bangkok Governor and Chief Fun Officer, shared during a monitoring meeting at the Water Drainage Office’s War Room in Din Daeng that the operations center gathers managers and staff from all departments to work together from morning till evening. They hold three daily meetings (morning, noon, and evening) to review situations and district reports, enabling immediate problem-solving orders.

Regarding Bangkok’s social media communication, currently followed by over 880,000 people, the style has been modernized to shed the old, overly formal government image. They now use simple, approachable language that reduces urban stress, such as encouraging messages during flooding, while still emphasizing accuracy, correctness, and strict fact-checking before publishing.

The communication team consists of Bangkok civil servants of various ages who are ready to adapt and work at full capacity with streamlined processes.

"All content is created in-house by Bangkok civil servants from different generations, without external agencies. Some urgent tasks are handled entirely by a single staff member who writes scripts and designs graphics to deliver news as quickly as possible," he said.
