Residents of the densely populated Romklao Housing community are facing a severe environmental and public health crisis after stagnant water has lasted over 4 days. The water has turned pitch black and emits a strong foul odor throughout the area. Assistance has been limited so far.
Mr. Chanakiat Chinsom, 45, a resident of Romklao Housing 10, said the floodwater shows no sign of receding and may even rise, following rain that fell around 3 a.m., worsening the situation. Water levels have remained steady or slightly increased. No water pumping efforts to drain the area have been made yet. He and other residents—numbering about 1,000—are living amid the foul water, with accumulated garbage and waste raising fears of disease outbreaks.
He added that currently he and many residents suffer from trench foot because they have to repeatedly wade through the water to collect food supplies for women and children still inside the housing area.
