Bangkok Monitors Rising Water and Accelerates Drainage Ahead of Rainfall from 10-13 Oct 2026

Governor Chadchart revealed that Bangkok is monitoring 'rising water' levels and accelerating drainage at all points to prepare for rain from 10-13 October 2026, expressing concern over the ongoing vulnerability of the eastern side of the city.

On 7 October 2026, at the front of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council meeting room in the Irrawat Phatthana Building at Bangkok City Hall, Din Daeng, Governor Chadchart Chutiphan discussed Bangkok's water situation and preparations for northern water flows and rainfall in risk areas. He said that while many areas are improving, the overall condition remains at a 'rising water' level and vulnerable, especially on the eastern side, where water accumulation persists along with additional inflows from Lat Krabang and Chachoengsao province.

The Pravet Burirom canal area continues to drain slowly due to heavy inflows from the east, while Bang Kapi and Lat Phrao districts still require close monitoring because canal water levels remain high. Although Bangkok can usually handle about 60–70 millimeters of rain, the current high water levels in canals and catchment areas mean heavy rainfall of that magnitude could cause quicker flooding and waterlogging. Residents in risk zones are therefore advised not to bring down belongings kept on high ground until the situation improves.

Bangkok will speed up water release from canals and retention areas as much as possible, inspect and repair heavily used pumps, and relocate pumps from areas where conditions have improved to support zones still experiencing issues, aiming to maximize drainage efficiency.

Preparing for Rainfall from 10–13 October: Accelerating Water Release to Manage the Situation

Governor Chadchart said that rainfall is expected to increase between 10–13 October 2026. Bangkok must closely monitor weather conditions, as rain may be intermittent but can still occur. The drainage system must be ready, especially as the city will be hosting the World Bank and IMF meetings during this period.

The Governor noted that based on past experience, Bangkok needs to refine its warning system. Currently, alerts mainly focus on canal banks and water sources, but flood predictions for specific villages or communities are not yet accurate enough.

: The future approach will emphasize an 'event-based warning' system. For example, when water levels start rising, residents will be advised to elevate belongings or prepare according to the area's risk level. This approach aims to align warnings more closely with real situations and reduce unnecessary alerts.

At the same time, residents who notice water overflowing from drainage pipes or unusual conditions are encouraged to inform Bangkok authorities promptly. This will help officials track situations at the community and village level, since it is impossible to inspect every drainage point all the time.

Moreover, Bangkok is developing and utilizing models to analyze risk areas. These will enhance drainage system efficiency and provide more localized warning data, ensuring accuracy to avoid causing unnecessary alarm from false alerts.

Mobilizing Support for the Eastern Side: Food, Medical Aid, and Water Pumping

For areas still affected, especially Nong Chok, Bangkok is concentrating resources including food, essential supplies, medical care, and installing and operating water pumps to accelerate water removal from these zones.

Governor Chadchart stated that not only Bangkok but also surrounding provinces such as Chachoengsao, Pathum Thani, and Samut Prakan have multiple flooded areas. Bangkok will intensify resource mobilization to the most affected points, while gradually reallocating personnel from improved areas to support those still in need.

Although drainage may progress slower than expected due to natural limitations and water volume, Bangkok will exert maximum effort to assist residents and minimize the impact of the water situation.
