Assembly of the Poor Joins Anti-IMF Protest, Prepares to Submit Six Demands as Riot Police Set Up Tight Security to Ban Entry

The "Assembly of the Poor" joined the anti-IMF protest march toward the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, preparing to submit six demands, while riot police set up tight security lines to prohibit entry.

On 16 October 2026, the Assembly of the Poor, led by leader Baramee Chairat, gathered with citizens, workers, and urban poor to hold activities marking the "International Day of Action for Food Sovereignty and Against Transnational Corporations." They organized a discussion forum and assembly at Lumphini Park (Gate 1), Pathumwan District, with about 500 participants.

The leaders organized the march by grouping participants by scarf colors: green, orange, red, and black. They proceeded along Sukhumvit Road, turned right at Asoke intersection, heading to the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) to submit six demands to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), emphasizing stopping the debt trap, reclaiming financial sovereignty, and food sovereignty.

The six demands to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) are as follows:

1. Cancel the debts of low- and middle-income countries facing debt crises.

2. Allow public scrutiny of foreign debts incurred by governments.

3. End subsidies to large corporations and redirect funds to support agroecological farming systems.

4. Increase state revenue through progressive corporate and wealth taxes.

5. Reform central banks to be democratic, transparent, and accountable to the people.

6. Center economic policy development on the people and the planet.

Meanwhile, the network opposing the World Bank and IMF, together with the Coordinating Committee for NGO Development (CCND), led by Jamnong Nuphan of the P-Move group, Sohabudin Loryapa, and Nakita Kerdnak, have camped since 15 October 2026 at Rama IV intersection on Ratchadaphisek Road with about 300 protesters. In the morning, most protesters were resting or attending to personal matters.

For the IMF-World Bank 2026 meeting today, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul attended as the chairperson to officially open the conference at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

The chance of the protesters submitting their demands directly to the Prime Minister is very slim because the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center and its vicinity have been declared a no-protest zone under the Public Assembly Act, with riot police and security officers strictly guarding all access points.
