Crane Collapse on Rama 2 Road Reveals Italian-Thai as Contractor

The recent crane collapse on Rama 2 Road in Samut Sakhon Province reveals that Italian-Thai Development is the contractor. The Minister of Transport has ordered a safety review after the incident.

On 15 Jan 2026, a concrete beam and crane collapsed, both parts and equipment used in constructing the elevated highway project, Expressway No. 82, Bang Khun Thian–Ban Phaeo, Section 7 at km 30+300 on Rama 2 Road in Samut Sakhon Province. This caused 5 people to be injured initially and 2 fatalities. Rescue teams transported the injured to the hospital.

Regarding this elevated highway, according to information from the Department of Highways, it is part of the intercity expressway project Bang Khun Thian–Ban Phaeo (M82). The design is an elevated highway above Highway No. 35 (Rama 2 Road), built to expressway standards with full access control. Construction is divided into two sections:

Section 1: Bang Khun Thian to Ekachai

The intercity expressway project Bang Khun Thian–Ban Phaeo, Bang Khun Thian to Ekachai section (M82), starts at km 9+731 in Samut Sakhon Province and ends at km 20+295 in Mueang Samut Sakhon District, Samut Sakhon Province. It spans 10.564 kilometers and is a six-lane elevated highway with two toll plazas: Phanthai Norasingh and Mahachai 1. Toll fees are distance-based (closed system).




Section 2: Ekachai to Ban Phaeo (the section where the incident occurred)

The intercity expressway project Bang Khun Thian–Ban Phaeo, Ekachai to Ban Phaeo section (M82), starts at km 20+295 in Mueang Samut Sakhon District and ends at km 36+645 in Ban Phaeo District, Samut Sakhon Province. It covers approximately 16.350 kilometers, designed as a six-lane elevated highway with four entry-exit points.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn stated that the facts of the incident will be investigated to determine whether it was an accident or involved other complications, noting that this type of event has repeatedly occurred with the same contractor. The contractor responsible for this project is Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited (ITD). He added that a safety review has already been ordered.
