Samut Sakhon Governor Confirms No Construction During Rama 2 Crane Collapse Incident

The Samut Sakhon Governor visited the site of the "Rama 2 crane collapse" incident, confirming that no construction was underway at the time. He plans to investigate the true cause and monitor the progress of recovering the bodies of the deceased. He acknowledged that after a similar incident in Si Khio, he had already issued instructions to the involved company.

On 15 Jan 2026 GMT+7, updates on the collapse of concrete beams and a crane—components and equipment used in constructing the elevated highway project on Expressway No. 82, the elevated route Bang Khun Thian–Ban Phaeo, section Ekachai–Ban Phaeo, kilometer 30+300 on Rama 2 Road in Samut Sakhon Province—reported 5 initial injuries and 2 deaths. Rescue personnel have transported the injured to hospitals.

At 12:30, it was reported that Mr. Amnat Charoensri, Governor of Samut Sakhon Province, along with his team, inspected the collapse of the crane used in the Rama 2 elevated highway construction (outbound direction), which fell near the Tha Chin River bridge close to the Paris Hotel, Tha Chin Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Sakhon Province.

Mr. Amnat stated that after discussions with employees of the responsible company, Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, and reports from officials, it is known that normally, construction on the Rama 2 elevated highway closes the route from about 7 to 8 p.m. to start work, reopening the route between 4 and 5 a.m., with no use of the main road during these specified times.

He confirmed there was no daytime construction; however, the incident may be linked to nighttime work, though the exact connection is unclear and under investigation. Moving forward, two 550-ton cranes will be used to recover the wreckage following engineering principles, with project engineers and relevant officials closely supervising the operation.

He acknowledged that since a similar incident occurred in another province, they have issued strict instructions to the contractor and related parties, assuring that a thorough investigation to determine the true cause will continue.

Initial reports indicate 2 deaths and 2 injuries, with the injured able to return home. Currently, the bodies have not yet been recovered and the deceased were trapped inside a vehicle.
