Canned Fish Factory Owner Apologizes for Labeling Issue, Affirms No Intent to Sell Mislabelled Products

The owner of the canned fish factory has apologized and clarified the case involving the seizure of over 10,000 cans due to a product labeling error, not because of using "tilapia"

Following Ms. Supamas Isarapakdi, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office, leading a team and relevant agencies to Samut Sakhon’s Mueang District to inspect and follow up on public concerns raised on social media about canned fish ingredients, where mackerel was reportedly replaced with another fish species, as previously reported.(Canned fish mislabeled: tests found "tilapia"; FDA warns of severe penalties, up to 10 years imprisonment)

Recently, Mr. Kittipong A. Wikunprasert, executive director of the company, along with Mr. Pathomrat A. Wikunprasert, another executive director of the canned fish manufacturer, issued an apology to those affected. They stressed that the company has not been complacent, having contacted consumers and provided initial compensation and care after learning of the issue.

Currently, the company is investigating and has a policy to recall the products involved, which are trial products. They clarified that the seizure of over 10,000 cans was due to a labeling error, not because 10,000 cans contained tilapia. An investigation is ongoing to determine exactly how many cans contained tilapia.

Mr. Kittipong further explained that tilapia is a safe, edible fish with health benefits such as high protein content. The company is now seeking approval to use the correct labels.

However, he emphasized that the company did not intend to release these products for sale, noting possible issues in the production process which are under investigation. Over approximately 15 years in business, the company has been committed to producing quality products at fair prices accessible to consumers.
