A woman from Pattani drowned and died while fleeing from Poipet near Prom Hod Canal in Sa Kaeo. Authorities quickly searched the area and successfully retrieved her body from the water.
On 14 June 2026, a tragic incident occurred at Prom Hod Canal, Ban Khok Sabaeng, Aranyaprathet District, along the Thailand-Cambodia border. Officials received a report that a Thai female worker had gone missing while trying to escape from Poipet, Cambodia, to return to Thailand via a natural crossing point. Her body was later found.
Lieutenant Colonel, Border Patrol Police Company 1203, part of the 12th Ranger Regiment Control Unit, said that around 2:00 p.m., they received coordination from a Thai assistance group in Poipet reporting that a Thai female worker had fled the Cambodian side using a natural route along the Thai-Cambodia border to return to Thailand.
During the journey, the group accompanying her lost contact and could not find the woman again, raising concerns that she might have encountered danger. The area is known for its canals and natural crossing points, which are highly risky, especially when the water level is deep and currents are strong.
Upon receiving the report, border patrol forces and related authorities promptly inspected the area and began searching likely crossing points suspected to be used for illegal border crossings, focusing on the border canal areas frequently used as entry and exit routes.
Around 3:00 p.m., officials discovered the deceased woman's body near the border canal after a short search. They were in the process of retrieving her body from the water to deliver it to relevant agencies for examination and identification.
Preliminary investigation identified the deceased as Ms. Fasiya, 28, from Yaring District, Pattani Province. It is initially believed that Ms. Fasiya either fell into the water or drowned while attempting to cross the border canal to return to Thailand. However, authorities will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of death for clarity on all aspects.
This incident deeply saddened the family and relatives in Pattani, who had been awaiting her return but were met with tragic news. It also highlights the risks faced by many Thai workers who use natural border crossings, which are illegal and expose them to dangers from the terrain, canal currents, and various potential accidents at any time.
Authorities are coordinating with the deceased's family to proceed with legal formalities and to allow the body to be returned for religious funeral rites.
