Paveena accompanied the parents who lost their 5-day-old baby to provide information to the Ang Thong Provincial Health Office, expressing concerns about the cause of the infant’s death and questioning whether a banquet was held in the pediatric ICU.
On 24 Jul 2026 GMT+7 at the Ang Thong Provincial Health Office, Mrs. Paveena Hongsakul, chairperson of the Paveena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women, accompanied a couple—a 40-year-old father and 36-year-old mother—who had lost their newborn after five days, and who were suspicious about the cause of death. They met with Dr. Taweechok Rojanaramkul, the Ang Thong Provincial Health Officer, to provide information about the infant’s death and to raise concerns about whether a banquet was held in the pediatric ICU. A meeting was held to discuss ways to assist and ensure justice for the family.
The 36-year-old mother tearfully explained that medical staff were having a banquet inside the pediatric ICU, located near her baby’s incubator, separated only by a transparent curtain. When she tried to visit her baby, a nurse shouted at her to leave, saying visits were not allowed due to the banquet. She asked the pediatric ICU head nurse if such an event was permitted. The attending doctor said the baby was not infected since it was in a sterile incubator, but she observed banquet staff serving food near the incubator without wearing any face masks.
On the morning of 21 Jul 2026 GMT+7, a pediatric ICU nurse called to say the baby’s condition had been critical since the previous night and urged the parents to come quickly. Around 10 a.m., the attending doctor informed them that CPR had been performed once and then spoke privately with the father, explaining the baby had sepsis causing a slow heartbeat. After examining the baby for 45 minutes, the doctor emerged to say the baby had died and urged the parents to promptly remove the body from the ICU for temple funeral rites. Later, a nurse called to ask if the funeral had been held. While preparing the funeral at the temple, the parents remained distressed and suspicious about the baby’s cause of death, so they sought help from the Paveena Foundation to ensure justice and to investigate the true cause of death.
Meanwhile, the 40-year-old father drew a diagram of the ICU layout for the media and explained the risks posed to their baby.
Further developments on this matter will be reported in due course.
