Around 11:30 a.m. on 10 August 2026, reports stated multiple gunshots were fired inside the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization, resulting in two injuries. One victim was Pol. Col. Thongchai Yenprasert, Chief Executive of Nonthaburi PAO. The suspect was Mr. Chalerm Riewrang, former MP of Nonthaburi.

Later, police detained Mr. Chalerm Riewrang, a well-known former MP, after he shot Pol. Col. Thongchai Yenprasert at the Nonthaburi PAO building within Nonthaburi City Hall. Reports confirm that Pol. Col. Thongchai has since died.

Profile of Mr. Chalerm Riewrang

Mr. Chalerm Riewrang is a prominent politician born on 18 February 1955, son of Mr. Siri Riewrang and Mrs. Chaleo Riewrang. He has six siblings. He holds a bachelor's degree in education from Suan Dusit Rajabhat Institute and a master's degree in social development arts from the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA).

Career and political path  

1. Began local politics as a member of the Nonthaburi Municipality Council before entering national politics.

2. Served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Nonthaburi for three terms.

  • 1996: Elected as MP for the first term under the Thai Citizens’ Party.
  • 2005: Elected as MP for the second term under the Thai Rak Thai Party.
  • 2011: Elected as MP for the third term under the Pheu Thai Party.

3. Changed parties and ran in various elections, affiliated with several parties including Chart Pattana Party, Pracharat Party, Palang Pracharath Party (where he was appointed a political official at the Prime Minister’s Office in 2019), Future Forward Party, and Bhumjaithai Party.

4. Other political positions

  • He served as adviser to the Minister of Interior (Lt. Gen. Sanan Khachornprasart).
  • He also served as adviser to the Minister of Labour (Ms. Uraiwan Thienthong).

Known political nicknames

  • "Snake Den": This nickname was given in late 1997 during his involvement as one of the 13 'snake den' defectors from Suphanburi/Nonthaburi factions of the Thai Citizens’ Party who voted against the party line to support Mr. Chuan Leekpai as Prime Minister.
  • "CD Den": This nickname originated from a police raid on his residence in Nonthaburi at one point.
