At 08:30 on 16 Dec 2025 GMT+7, an update on the custody of a Cambodian family in a village in Mueang District, Trat province: Mr. Chantra, 44, Miss Chanriya, 41, a six-month-old boy, and Miss A (alias), 18, wife of Police Colonel Sot Somol, commander of Border Patrol Police Battalion 823 overseeing Samrood District, Battambang province, Cambodia, suspected of being spies for Cambodia.
After several hours of questioning Miss A and her family, no behavior indicating they are spies for Police Colonel Sot was found. They were released to return home but remain under close surveillance. All four mobile phones are still confiscated for full data examination to find evidence confirming whether they are spies. Authorities are confident the family will not flee, as they have lived and worked here for over 20 years.
Regarding Miss A's marriage to Police Colonel Sot, security officials found he already had a wife in Cambodia before having an affair with Miss A after meeting at the restaurant where she worked. They married on 28 May 2025 GMT+7, but security believes Miss A was deceived into the marriage. Afterward, she fled back to her country before border clashes began and has not returned since.
Meanwhile, the Trat Internal Security Operations Command, local security, and administration in the five districts under curfew have heightened surveillance to the highest level to prevent espionage from Cambodia, which is seeking Thai military positions. This follows an incident where the Trat Marine Task Force was ambushed with three M79 grenades.
