Khao Kheow Open Zoo Successfully Breeds Spoon-billed Sandpiper for First Time After 20 Years

Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi has successfully bred the 'Spoon-billed Sandpiper' for the first time after more than 20 years, following the bird's extinction in the wild in Thailand for over 40 years.

At Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Si Racha District, Chonburi Province, Mr. Narongwit Chodchoi, the zoo director, revealed that the zoo has achieved the first successful breeding of the 'Spoon-billed Sandpiper.' This marks a significant step in conserving Thailand's rare wildlife after more than 20 years of studying and managing the bird's breeding behavior.

The 'Spoon-billed Sandpiper' is a rare bird that has not been seen in Thailand's natural environment for over 40 years. Currently, it is only found in some zoos and breeding facilities. The Zoological Park Organization under the Royal Patronage of Thailand has only one pair of these birds, which are under the care of Khao Kheow Open Zoo.

This success resulted from close cooperation among all zoo staff who provided attentive care in terms of food, environment, and continuous monitoring of the birds' behavior. They were able to hatch a chick successfully from an incubator, representing a vital hope for conserving and increasing the Spoon-billed Sandpiper population in the future.

Mr. Narongwit stated that this achievement not only reflects Khao Kheow Open Zoo's capability in conserving rare wildlife but also serves as a crucial motivation to continue researching and developing conservation methods for endangered species in Thailand.

The public can follow the growth of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper chick through Khao Kheow Open Zoo and its various public relations channels, becoming part of raising awareness and supporting the conservation of Thailand's rare wildlife.
