In Rayong, two young engineers driving back to their residence lost control, overturned, and crashed heavily into a high-voltage power pole by the roadside. The car exploded and caught fire. Locals tried to help but were unable to save them. Both men died trapped inside the vehicle.
At approximately 03:00 on 29 Aug 2026 GMT+7, Police Lieutenant Anuwat Kamdokrak, the duty officer at Huai Pong Police Station in Mueang Rayong District, received a report of an SUV losing control, overturning, and crashing into a high-voltage power pole by the roadside, causing an explosion and a severe fire. The incident occurred on Sukhumvit Road opposite Wat Chak Luk Ya, on the outbound side of Rayong city heading toward Ban Chang District. Upon notification, police coordinated with the Map Ta Phut Municipality fire department, which dispatched one fire truck to control the blaze. However, the fire had already consumed nearly the entire vehicle by the time firefighters arrived.
Ms. Suphattra Saeng-ngam, a nearby resident, said she was asleep when she heard screeching brakes followed by two successive explosions. Upon investigating, she saw a car stuck against a power pole and quickly engulfed in flames. Witnessing the scene, locals attempted to rescue those trapped inside the vehicle but were unsuccessful.
Mr. Charan Chanmanee, admin of the Zoom Rayong Facebook page, revealed the deceased were Mr. Techit, 30, the driver, and Mr. Phonthawat, 30, the front-seat passenger. Both were engineers at an industrial factory. Before the accident, they had dined in downtown Rayong and were driving back to their residence. They subsequently lost contact with their families, who have been informed of the incident.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by authorities, who will conduct a thorough inquiry to determine the exact circumstances.
