Man High on Meth Causes Disturbance at Chong Samaesan Temple, Chonburi Shoots Slingshot and Kicks Cuckoo Bird

A man in a methamphetamine-induced psychotic state wielding a knife caused a disturbance at Chong Samaesan Temple in Chonburi Province, shooting a slingshot and repeatedly kicking a 'cuckoo' bird. Authorities spent over 30 minutes negotiating before he surrendered and gave himself up to police officials with no resistance.

On 7 Nov 2016, the radio center at Sattahip Police Station received reports of a man acting irrationally, carrying a knife and wandering around while harming animals, causing significant fear among local residents. The incident occurred near the summit of the Viharn of Luang Pho Dam at Chong Samaesan Temple, Samaesan Subdistrict, Sattahip District, Chonburi Province. Officers, including Lieutenant Pasakorn Phachurabian Na, deputy investigation officer at Samaesan police post, and Boonchu Srinarang, the local subdistrict headman police inspector, were dispatched to intervene.

At the scene near the parking area beside the Viharn, officers found 35-year-old Bubu, a Myanmar laborer, in an agitated state. He held a large knife (e-to), scissors, and a slingshot, and was attacking a cuckoo bird. He had shot the bird with the slingshot causing it to fall from a tree, then repeatedly kicked it multiple times. The bird cried out in pain and fear from the brutal treatment, creating a deeply distressing scene for those witnessing the cruelty.

During the incident, officers approached with caution and refrained from getting too close out of concern for unexpected violence, as the suspect was armed with a knife. They spent more than 30 minutes negotiating before the man finally surrendered and walked over to give himself up. Officers then arrested him and took him to the investigators for legal proceedings, also sending him to a hospital for urine drug testing.

When questioned, Bubu admitted he previously worked as a fishing crew member but was fired by his employer due to his drug addiction. Before the incident, he purchased methamphetamine from fellow Myanmar fishermen at 220 baht per pill, a transaction that had occurred multiple times before.
