Heavy rains have caused a mushroom frenzy in Kroburi, Korat, with stalls set up almost in every village. Rocket-head mushrooms sell for 500 baht per kilogram, while Chabo mushrooms go for 300 baht per kilogram, generating daily incomes from thousands to tens of thousands baht per person.
On 19 May 2026 GMT+7, reporters observed that many villagers in Kroburi District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, continue to gather termite mushrooms from nearby forests throughout the day. The recent heavy rains combined with hot, humid weather have made it easy for these mushrooms to sprout, especially near the Kroburi National Reserved Forest and Thap Lan National Park. As a result, termite mushrooms are now widely displayed for sale across nearly every village.
For example, at the Ban Huai Sai intersection in Ban Mai Subdistrict, dozens of villagers have set up stalls selling mushrooms, wild vegetables, and maggots, creating a small market for passersby in the area.
Mrs. Saiwarin Thongnak, 50, from Sub Udom village, Ban Mai Subdistrict, Kroburi District, said that during this first heavy rain period, various forest mushrooms emerge, but termite mushrooms, also known as termite mushrooms, are currently the most abundant, having appeared continuously for 4-5 days. Villagers go out to the nearby forests to collect them, finding mushrooms scattered throughout. Experienced gatherers who know the right spots can collect dozens of kilograms per day. These groups spend the entire day harvesting and then sell the mushrooms in their villages or gather at busy spots to sell collectively. She and her friends regularly set up stalls at this location every year during the mushroom season.
The selling price for premium unopened termite mushrooms, called rocket-head mushrooms, is 500 baht per kilogram. The next grade, unopened mushrooms known locally as Chabo mushrooms, sell for 300 baht per kilogram. Fully opened mushrooms are packaged and sold in bags for 50 baht each. Consequently, she and her friends earn several thousand to tens of thousands of baht daily from selling termite mushrooms, depending on how much they collect. Buyers frequently stop by throughout the day because termite mushrooms are known for their good taste and sweetness, suitable for many dishes, and are only available during this time of year.
