The Chiang Mai Police Commander revealed updates on the fire incident that claimed five lives, stating that the autopsy results show death from asphyxiation with no toxins found in the bodies. He explained that the fire occurred at two points in the house, emphasizing it is likely an accident, but no leads have been ruled out yet.
The fire at a two-story house in Pa Daet Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chiang Mai Province, in the early hours of 8 January deeply saddened the family and nearby neighbors. The blaze caused the death of five family members, including twin girls aged only five, leading the bereaved family to wonder if there were other suspicious circumstances involved, as previously reported.
The latest update, on 12 January 2026, came from Pol. Maj. Gen. Yutthana Kaenchan, Commander of Chiang Mai Provincial Police, who disclosed that preliminary autopsy results from the forensic department at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital found all victims died from asphyxiation, with soot in the lungs and no toxins detected in their bodies. They are currently awaiting the official medical report.
Regarding the theory of a staged murder motivated by family conflict, this matter occurred long ago and has been resolved, with no connection to the fire's cause. On the day of the incident, police reviewed CCTV footage inside the house to observe the situation and the victims’ reactions during the fire, finding no evidence of anyone entering or leaving the house before the fire started.
The fire occurred at two points inside the house: the living room of the two-story house and the adjacent traditional Thai house. Physically, the fire likely spread from one area to another. Based on this, other causes have been excluded, and it is fairly clear that the fire was accidental.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Yutthana said investigators are currently awaiting reports from forensic experts and the Provincial Electricity Authority, which jointly inspected the scene. These scientific findings will provide clear answers to the public. The police are committed to clarifying all facts and details in this case.
