Chiang Mai Commemorates Kruba Srivichai on 91st Anniversary of Doi Suthep Road Opening

Chiang Mai province held a commemorative ceremony for "Kruba Srivichai" on the 91st anniversary of the opening of the road to Doi Suthep, continuing the faith of the Lanna people.

On 30 April 2026, reporters reported that at the Kruba Srivichai Monument grounds in Chiang Mai province, Mr. Ratthaphon Naradisorn, the Chiang Mai Governor, presided over the ritual and paid respects at the monument to honor Kruba Srivichai's contributions on the 91st anniversary of the Doi Suthep road opening, with government officials, monks, and the public joining the ceremony.

The activities took place in front of the Kruba Srivichai Monument and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Ratchaworawihan in Suthep Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai District, to preserve tradition and express the faith of Chiang Mai residents toward the "Saint of Lanna." Every year on 30 April, Chiang Mai people commemorate the historic event of the first opening of the route to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in 1935. This road was built through the devotion of the people led by Kruba Srivichai, with construction starting on 9 November 1934 and completed in just over five months.

On this occasion, the Chiang Mai Governor led participants in rituals and paying respects to collectively remember Kruba Srivichai’s merits, who is the spiritual center and symbol of faith for the Lanna people. Additionally, a parade of antique Lanna vehicles carried a likeness of Kruba Srivichai up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, reenacting the historic journey when Kruba Srivichai led devotees up the mountain for the first time after the road's completion.

These activities reflect the cooperation of all sectors in preserving and continuing valuable traditions, as well as maintaining the cultural identity of Chiang Mai province for future generations.
