Update on the Nan River Situation: Water Level Expected to Peak Tonight at Midnight Before Gradually Receding

Nan Irrigation Project An update on the water situation at measurement point N1 reveals that within the next four hours, water levels will peak before gradually receding after being routed through Wiang Sa and then released into Sirikit Dam. Authorities warn residents in Nan Municipality to stay vigilant and prepare for localized flooding.

On 19 August 2026 at 20:00, reporters observed the atmosphere at water measurement point N1 in Mueang subdistrict, Mueang District, Nan Province. This point monitors water levels and is a public park along the Nan River. Irrigation officials are present continuously measuring water levels, with tents and a TV screen showing water volume data from various rivers and districts in Nan Province for public access. Residents have been coming to check water levels and inquire with officials as the water rises.

Mrs. Apiwan Khunphet, 56, a local resident in the city area, said that last year around July, floodwaters reached 9.40 meters. Today, at measurement point N1 in Mueang District, the water level has begun to overflow, reaching about 8.40 meters and nearing the riverbank edge. Officials predict that tonight, from 11 p.m. to around 2 a.m., water levels will rise to approximately 9.10 meters.

Currently, local residents in Mueang District have evacuated to higher ground, including herself, due to lessons learned from last year’s flooding when the water rose quickly and people barely managed to evacuate with their belongings. The main water volume flows from Pua and Tha Wang Pha districts into Mueang District.

She and some neighbors will continue monitoring water levels until about 11 p.m. and again around 2 a.m. to prepare for possible evacuation. She expressed strong confidence in the work of officials and community leaders, who have made thorough preparations, especially as water begins to flow in.

/ Nan Irrigation Project At 20:30, the Nan Irrigation Project updated the situation at water station N.1 in Mueang District, Nan Province. Mr. Meechai Patiyut, Director of the Nan Irrigation Project, stated that water levels will continue to rise and flood several areas in Nan Municipality. The next four hours will see peak water levels around 9.10 meters, after which levels will gradually decrease.

Between 18:00 and 19:00, water levels rose by 16 cm, but from 19:00 to 20:00, the increase slowed to just 6 cm. The rate of rise is significantly decreasing, and in the next hour, the increase may be only 4-5 cm, though monitoring remains necessary.

This is influenced by water flowing into areas lower than the riverbanks, then gradually being channeled to Wiang Sa, where there is substantial capacity to hold water and release it into Sirikit Dam without obstacles.

Nevertheless, full restoration preparations will be completed within 1-2 days. Tonight, multiple areas in Nan Municipality are expected to flood. Residents are advised to be cautious, prepare supplies such as food, drinking water, and medications, or move to shelters. The rapid flooding is due to heavy rainfall, which caused water levels to rise swiftly.
