Sukhothai Raises Yellow Flag at Ban Hat Saphan Chan Water Gate Amid Flood Watch

Flash floods in Si Satchanalai District, Sukhothai Province, have eased, while officials raised a yellow flag at the Ban Hat Saphan Chan water gate to monitor the situation.

At 09:00 on 21 Aug 2026 GMT+7, reporters noted that the flash flood situation in Ban Tuek and Pang Ngiu subdistricts, Si Satchanalai District, Sukhothai Province, has eased as floodwaters have flowed into the Yom River. The water then reached the Ban Hat Saphan Chan water gate in Nai Mueang subdistrict, Sawankhalok District, which serves as the intake point before releasing water back into the Yom River. The river flows through Sawankhalok, Si Samrong, Mueang, and Kong Krailat districts sequentially, causing water levels at the gate to rise.

Officials recently changed the signal flag from green to yellow because the water flow through the gate reached 428 cubic meters per second, exceeding the 400 cubic meters per second threshold for monitoring. This prompted the authorities to raise the yellow flag as a cautionary measure.

Measurements taken at 06:00 on 21 August 2026 GMT+7 showed water levels in front of the Ban Hat Saphan Chan water gate at 61.80 meters above mean sea level and behind the gate at 58.03 meters, with a depth of 9.30 meters. Water flow was 420 cubic meters per second, and the storage capacity was 13.040 million cubic meters, equivalent to 85.23% of capacity. Officials are currently operating five sluice gates to release water.
