A rescue team traveling from Chiang Mai to assist with flooding in Nan lost control of their vehicle and skidded off the road, injuring two people. Both are now reported safe.
At 17:30 on 21 Aug 2016, police from Mae Tha station in Mae Tha district, Lampang province, received a report of a rescue vehicle skidding off the Lampang-Phrae highway near Pang Mao Monastery in Wang Ngern subdistrict, Mae Tha district, Lampang. Officers and the Mae Tha Rescue Association promptly responded to the scene.
The accident occurred on a mountainous stretch with rain making the road slippery. An Isuzu pickup truck, bronze in color with license plate PW 5977 Chiang Mai, operated by volunteers from the Dewarit Songtham Saraphi Rescue Unit in Chiang Mai, lost control and plunged about 4 meters off the road. Two rescue volunteers, Mr. Kiattakorn and Mr. Jirayut, were injured and taken by Mae Tha rescue personnel to Mae Tha Hospital. Both are now reported to be safe.
Initial inquiries revealed that the rescue vehicle had departed Chiang Mai heading to Nan to aid flood victims. However, during the journey, rain caused slippery road conditions, and combined with the winding mountainous road at the accident site, this led to the incident.
