Lampang Provincial Court rules on the case "Villagers swarming to collect shrimp" Sentenced to 1 year imprisonment and a 20,000 baht fine, but the penalty was halved to 6 months imprisonment and a 10,000 baht fine after the defendants confessed.
At 22:45 on 16 March 2026, a shrimp truck suffered a tire blowout and overturned off the road in Thoen District, Lampang Province, scattering 120 boxes of shrimp weighing over 1,200 kilograms onto the road. Although the driver tried to prevent villagers from taking the shrimp, no one listened. Eventually, only 4 boxes remained. Following the incident, police quickly tracked down 32 villagers who took the shrimp to face charges and enter the legal process.
Although the villagers later expressed remorse and insisted the incident was unintentional, they apologized to society and asked for a chance to make amends. The event significantly affected the reputation of the subdistrict and district.
The victim’s lawyer stated that compensation would positively affect the case. Initial damages were estimated at about 300,000 baht, proposing an upfront payment of 60,000 baht with the remainder paid in installments before the court’s judgment. Police charged those involved with nighttime theft and opportunistic theft, then submitted the case to the prosecutor and the court process.
On 26 August 2026, reporters confirmed that Lampang Provincial Court sentenced all defendants to 1 year imprisonment and a 20,000 baht fine. Due to their confessions, the court reduced the penalties by half to 6 months imprisonment and a 10,000 baht fine, suspended for 2 years with 1 year probation.
However, this case serves as a cautionary example: even if property is lost or scattered at an accident scene, taking it without rights may constitute a legal offense.
