Mae Hong Son was severely affected by hours of heavy rain, causing flash floods that inundated homes in the Pok Tawan community and near the Teachers' Savings Cooperative. Roads were damaged and a backhoe was submerged in water.
On 7 Sep 2026 GMT+7, a reporter reported that heavy rain fell for several hours past midnight in Chong Kham and Pang Mu subdistricts, Mueang District, Mae Hong Son Province. This caused flash floods as the Mae Hong Son River overflowed, flooding homes in the Pok Tawan East community within Mae Hong Son municipality and communities near the Mae Hong Son Teachers' Savings Cooperative, affecting over ten households. Additionally, floodwaters swept away a construction contractor's backhoe, which was parked during work on a riverbank embankment, overturning it and submerging it in the Mae Hong Son River.
The road leading to the Mae Hong Son Teachers' Savings Cooperative, adjacent to the Mae Hong Son River, was eroded by floodwaters, forming deep cavities and damaging half a lane over a stretch of more than 40 meters. However, one traffic lane remains passable. Meanwhile, the strong floodwaters flowing through the community near the cooperative caused some residents to fear for their safety and evacuate their homes to higher ground. After the waters recede, authorities will survey the damage to provide assistance.
This is the second time heavy rains and flash floods have hit the Mae Hong Son River area near the Teachers' Savings Cooperative community. The first event caused significant damage to residents in the Pok Tawan East community and the cooperative area, prompting construction of a riverbank embankment to prevent river overflow from flooding nearby homes. However, before the embankment was completed, heavy rains caused the river to flood again, sweeping away the contractor's backhoe, eroding and damaging the road, and inundating homes near the Mae Hong Son River for the second time with damage comparable to the first incident.
