Handshake and Oath Ceremony Ends Dispute Over Eviction of 7 Families from Village

The Sob Moei District Chief and police led negotiations between two local groups to resolve a conflict based on a dream belief, culminating in a handshake and oath-taking ceremony, affirming that seven families can lawfully reside in the village.

The dispute arose in Ban Huai Hia community, Village No. 5, Pa Pong Subdistrict, Sob Moei District, Mae Hong Son Province, where seven families were accused based on a personal belief (a dream) concerning the village ancestors and pressured to dismantle their homes and move out by 10 October, as previously reported.Read the report: Police and volunteer forces protect seven families after being pressured to leave the village over a child's dream.)

On 8 October 2026, Mr. Kamphan Mokthaisong, Sob Moei District Chief, together with Police Lieutenant Colonel Nakorn Srikanta, Chief Inspector of Kong Koi Police Station, Mr. Patsakorn Laowanasand, Mayor of Pa Pong Subdistrict Administrative Organization, and Acting Second Lieutenant Supachai Juyeen, Senior Social Development Officer from Mae Hong Son Highland Development Center, held a mediation meeting at Pa Pong Subdistrict Administrative Organization meeting room, Sob Moei District, Mae Hong Son Province.

The mediation resulted in both parties agreeing to end the conflict, shake hands to show sincerity, and agree to live peacefully together.

The Sob Moei District Chief emphasized the importance of stopping slander and accusations, clarifying that evicting villagers is illegal. Personal beliefs cannot be used to violate others' rights as long as the seven families engage in honest livelihoods and cause no disturbance.

For security, Kong Koi Police collaborated with the Mae Hong Son Provincial Investigation Unit and local administration volunteers to visit Ban Huai Hia village, closely safeguarding the lives and property of the seven affected families.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Nakorn Srikanta confirmed ongoing patrols to maintain peace and strict law enforcement against any rights violations, ensuring villagers can live safely. Officers maintained close security during negotiations to prevent conflicts, allowing talks to proceed smoothly with mutual understanding and successful resolution.

After the negotiations, in the afternoon of the same day, both parties, along with the Sob Moei District Chief, attended an oath-taking ceremony at Saen Thong Temple, Omkoi District, Chiang Mai Province, as a solemn pledge to strictly adhere to the agreement.

Additionally, on 9 October at around 10:00 a.m., the Sob Moei District Chief plans to visit Ban Huai Hia School to meet and build understanding with community members on coexistence, promoting lasting harmony and a return to normal peaceful life in the community.
