
Update on the crane falling on a train incident: 86 people affected, with 22 fatalities reported. The State Railway has announced route adjustments and suspension of 14 trains on the Northeast line.
The incident involved Special Express Train No. 21, a diesel railcar departing from Krung Thep Apiwat Station bound for Ubon Ratchathani. A crane lifting a large concrete component used for the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project fell onto the train near railway kilometer marker 220, pillar 9, in Moo 11, Ban Thanon Kot, Sikhiu Subdistrict, Sikhiu District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. This caused three diesel railcar carriages to derail and catch fire.
The Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Public Health Office reported on the crane falling incident involving Train No. 21 from Krung Thep Apiwat to Ubon Ratchathani, updated at 12:50 on 14 Jan 2026 GMT+7, with a total of 86 affected individuals.
Deaths: 22
Severely injured: 8
Moderately injured: 19
Minor injuries: 37

Anan Phonimdaeng, Deputy Governor of the State Railway of Thailand and Acting Governor, stated that the construction crane owned by the contractor for the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project contracts 3-4, for the civil works from Lam Takhong to Sikhiu and Kutjik to Khok Kruat sections, fell onto Special Express Train No. 21 as it passed between Nong Nam Khun and Sikhiu Stations in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, causing the train to be unable to proceed.
Therefore, the State Railway has had to suspend and reroute trains on the Northeast line between the Kaeng Khoi Junction, Bua Yai Junction, and Nakhon Ratchasima stations for today (14 January 2026), affecting 14 trains as follows.
1. Trains suspended: 2 trains as listed below.
- Special Express Diesel Railcar No. 21/22 from Krung Thep Apiwat to Ubon Ratchathani and back to Krung Thep Apiwat.
2. Trains with route changes: 12 trains as listed below.
- Special Express No. 23/24 from Krung Thep Apiwat to Ubon Ratchathani and back to Krung Thep Apiwat.
- Rapid Train No. 135/136 from Krung Thep Apiwat to Ubon Ratchathani and back to Krung Thep Apiwat.
- Express Train No. 71/72 from Krung Thep Apiwat to Ubon Ratchathani and back to Krung Thep Apiwat.
- Rapid Train No. 141/142 from Krung Thep Apiwat to Ubon Ratchathani and back to Krung Thep Apiwat.
- Rapid Train No. 139/140 from Krung Thep Apiwat to Ubon Ratchathani and back to Krung Thep Apiwat.
- Ordinary Train No. 233/234 from Bangkok (Hua Lamphong) to Surin and back to Bangkok (Hua Lamphong).
