Regarding the update on the crane collapse incident at the high-speed rail construction project that crushed a train in Sikhiu District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province on 14 Jan 2026, Ms. Kanchana Phoolkaew, Secretary-General of the Social Security Office, expressed concern and ordered the Nakhon Ratchasima Social Security Office to verify data and urgently provide assistance to the victims.
Ms. Kanchana Phoolkaew stated that initial investigations found the crane carrying cement fell onto three carriages of the Bangkok-Aphiwat–Ubon Ratchathani train, causing a fire. So far, 32 people have died and 67 injured. Among the victims, 10 were employees of Italian-Thai Development PLC working at the time of the incident, and one missing person is still being investigated.
The Social Security Office is currently thoroughly verifying the insured status of those affected to expedite assistance according to legal benefits. Victims who are insured persons will receive benefits from the Social Security Fund, including old-age pension lump sums, which their heirs will receive along with accrued interest.
Funeral expenses of 50,000 baht and death benefits apply: those who contributed for 36 months or more but less than 120 months will receive death benefits equivalent to an average of two months' wages; those contributing 120 months or more will receive benefits equivalent to six months' wages. Medical expenses will be paid according to actual costs following the Medical Committee's announcement.
In cases where insured persons die from work-related causes, they are entitled to compensation from the Workmen's Compensation Fund, including 50,000 baht for funeral expenses, death compensation at 70% of wages for 10 years, and old-age pension lump sums with interest. Injured persons are entitled to medical expenses paid as needed per ministerial regulations, compensation for work absence at 70% of wages during medical leave as prescribed by doctors, compensation for loss of limbs or work incapacity at 70% of wages, and lifelong disability compensation at 70% of wages.
The Secretary-General of the Social Security Office added that the Nakhon Ratchasima Social Security Office has been assigned to visit victims at Sikhiu Hospital to coordinate, provide advice, and facilitate insured persons and affected families to ensure they receive their benefits correctly and quickly.
