Explosion at Surin Arms Depot Calms Down Cause Unknown, Not Near Border

An explosion occurred inside the arms depot at Surin Phakdi Camp in Surin Province and is beginning to subside. The explosions have lessened. The governor visited the site, said the cause is still unknown, and ordered officials to be on standby and ready to respond, awaiting a safe window to inspect the area.

On 24 Feb 2026, an explosion took place inside the arms depot of Border Patrol Police Company 21 (BPP 21) at Surin Phakdi Camp, Mueang District, Surin Province, with periodic intense bursts of flame. Firefighters are currently working to control the incident, as previously reported.

Later at 20:45, Chamroen Waenphet, the Surin provincial governor, told Thairath TV that initially there was a fire at the arms depot, the location storing weapons, with continuous and intensifying explosions. Recently, the explosions have lessened, but the area remains very hot and inaccessible. Firefighters have positioned trucks about 100 meters from the site to control the situation, as entering now could be dangerous due to ongoing bursts and flying debris.

The arms depot is located within Surin Phakdi Camp, situated on a bypass route in Mueang District. It is a safe distance from local communities and not near the border.

Fire trucks have been placed on standby in two zones: an inner perimeter and an outer route, ready in case the fire spreads. The exact origin of the fire is unclear at this time, but it does not affect surrounding communities due to the distance. Officials will inspect the camp buildings later.
