On 18 March 2026, reporters reported on how volunteer agencies in Kalasin province are adapting amid continuously rising energy costs and fuel shortages in many areas. The Metta Tham Rescue unit in Nong Kung Si district has changed its coffin transport method to aid the poor, switching from pickup trucks to motorcycle sidecars, known as "saleng," to save fuel costs and keep their charitable missions ongoing.
Images of dedicated rescue workers loading coffins onto a saleng to deliver them to Ban Nong Mai Tai, Khok Khruea subdistrict, Nong Kung Si district, Kalasin, have impressed many and highlight the hardships volunteers face during the fuel price surge. Officials said that although the vehicle is smaller, their commitment to helping people remains unchanged, successfully delivering coffins to bereaved families amid heartfelt gratitude from local residents.
Phra Khru Sangharak Kriangkphon Sutthammo, head of the Metta Tham Rescue unit in Nong Kung Si district, said, “In this energy crisis, we must manage our limited budget efficiently. Rising fuel prices heavily impact larger vehicles, but death and public distress cannot wait. Therefore, we decided to use motorcycle sidecars for coffin transport over suitable distances to reduce fuel expenses. Despite high fuel costs, my team and I affirm we will not stop working. We will find every way to reach those in need, ensuring equal assistance to the poor in line with the Tri-Lak Project’s mission.”
This mission is part of the "Tri-Lak Project: Free Help with No Charges," a core initiative of the Metta Tham Rescue unit focusing on providing coffins and funeral services free of charge to the poor and unclaimed bodies, easing the burden on grieving families during economic hardship.
The Metta Tham Rescue unit in Nong Kung Si district continues to operate under the motto “In danger, we are here to relieve suffering.” They urge local residents that if they face hardship or need assistance, they can contact the rescue unit 24 hours a day. Even if it means riding a saleng to help, the rescue team is ready to perform their duties to the best of their ability.
