Korat Zoo Announces Name of Dwarf Hippo Calf After Winning Top Vote

"Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo" announced the name of the "dwarf hippo calf" who is the niece of "Moo Deng" after receiving the highest number of votes

At 11:00 a.m. on 1 May 2026, Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo held a grand ceremony to announce the name of its new beloved dwarf hippo calf. Ms. Jongkolnee Kaewsod, Director of the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand, led the event. Official votes from participants nationwide totaled 371,509, with the name "Moo Daeng" receiving the highest number of votes, winning the title for the little superstar's official name.

Mr. Thanachon Kensing, Director of Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo, explained the success: "Moo Daeng" is a product of the national conservation and breeding program, a pairing between "Bao Khanun," a sire from Chiang Mai Zoo, and "Je Moo Krob," a dam from Khao Kheow Open Zoo. They were paired at the end of 2024, resulting in the birth of the little dwarf hippo on 22 March 2026. This is the first dwarf hippo born at Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo.

Meanwhile, "Moo Deng," the popular dwarf hippo at Khao Kheow Zoo in Chonburi province, is the aunt of "Moo Daeng." After the veterinary team confirmed the calf’s good health, it was introduced to the public during Songkran and a naming vote was held, receiving overwhelming support beyond expectations.

This achievement marks an important milestone in wildlife conservation by the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand, bringing smiles and boosting tourism. Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo thanks everyone who participated in naming and voting, and invites the public to visit and enjoy the charm of “Moo Daeng” daily at the dwarf hippo exhibit.
