Summer Storm with Hail Strikes Chaiyaphum, Affecting 5 Villages Worst in 10 Years

A summer storm with hail and strong gusty winds struck, damaging over 10 houses across five villages. Officials are rushing to conduct further surveys for initial relief efforts.

On 7 May 2026, reports stated that around 1 p.m. on 6 May, a summer storm with hail and strong gusty winds hit Chaiyaphum Province, especially affecting five villages: Ban Nong Waeng Village No. 1, Ban Huai Phai Nuea No. 11, Ban Nong Samran No. 12, Ban Hua Sanam No. 13, and Ban Sanam Chai No. 17, all in Nong Waeng Subdistrict, Nong Bua Daeng District. This was the most severe storm in 10 years, damaging over 10 houses. Officials promptly surveyed the damage and provided initial assistance.

Somboon, 62, owner of a parcel delivery shop in Ban Huai Phai Nuea No. 11, Nong Waeng Subdistrict, Nong Bua Daeng District, said that while sitting inside her shop, heavy rain and hail suddenly fell. She was with her 4-year-old granddaughter and was unable to close the door in time, causing the storm winds to scatter items across the floor. A glass cabinet displaying medals and trophies was shattered.

After the rain eased, she inspected inside and around the house, finding that the sunshade roof next to the house had collapsed and was completely destroyed. She said she had not experienced such a severe storm in many years and felt very scared and shocked. She appealed to relevant officials to inspect the damage and urgently assist affected villagers in the initial stage.

Pirawadee, 35, a resident of Village No. 11, Nong Waeng Subdistrict, Nong Bua Daeng District, said that around 1 to 2 p.m., while sitting in front of her house, strong winds and heavy rain suddenly struck without warning. Rainwater overflowed onto roads and flooded several areas inside her home. She and neighbors ran in different directions seeking shelter to survive. While sheltering, she heard loud noises of corrugated metal roofs being torn off by the storm, but did not know whose homes were affected. She waited at a relative’s house until the rain stopped. Upon inspection, she found her house severely damaged by the storm, with all wooden doors soaked and broken.

Members of the Subdistrict Administrative Organization council have surveyed the area, but relief efforts will proceed according to the official procedures of the Nong Waeng Subdistrict Administrative Organization.
